How the ChatGPT watermark checker works

This checker reads supported C2PA and metadata records in the file you submit. It reports OpenAI only when a structured issuer or generator field identifies it; generic metadata and a missing manifest are not origin verdicts.

Structured C2PA fields

Generator, issuer, actions, validation, and trust are displayed only when the validator returns them.

OpenAI verification path

Provider-controlled provenance is listed as a separate step with a link to OpenAI’s supported public verifier.

Audio provenance inventory

Supported audio formats are checked for container metadata, encoder fields, and returned Content Credentials.

Text is a separate inspection path

Pasted-text inspection is coming soon in the universal scanner and remains separate from file-level OpenAI provenance.

Evidence you can use

Every report separates cryptographic credentials, declared metadata, and provider-controlled verification. You can see exactly what ran before deciding what the file proves.

  • C2PA Content Credentials parsing and cryptographic validation for supported files.
  • Declared EXIF, XMP, IPTC, container, and generator metadata evidence.
  • A precise boundary and official path for provider-controlled verification when one exists.

Frequently asked questions

What can this page verify?

It inspects the supplied file for structured C2PA and supporting metadata. OpenAI attribution is shown only when it is returned by a structured issuer or generator field; generic metadata is not proof of OpenAI origin.

How is an OpenAI embedded watermark checked?

The file-level pass reports C2PA and metadata evidence here, then links supported provider-controlled image and audio signals to OpenAI’s public provenance verifier.

Does this page check ChatGPT text?

The ChatGPT route is for supported image and audio provenance. Pasted text belongs in the Unicode inspector, which inventories literal hidden characters without treating them as OpenAI-origin evidence.

What does removing C2PA metadata do?

It removes the machine-readable provenance record from that file. This page does not determine whether any proprietary embedded watermark remains, and whether removal is appropriate depends on your disclosure obligations.
